We Interrupt Our Regularly Scheduled Japan to Bring You - Mexico
I adored The Book of Life. It had some pacing issues near the end, and honestly I didn't see the point of making such a big hullabaloo about the bandits and that silly fight at the end, but everything else was great. All the characters, the luscious designs, and the relationships, especially between La Muerte and Xibalba (my two favorites). However, I felt the film was trying too hard to push Maria as this independent, powerful feminist in ways that were unnatural. Everything was out of place or said through clunky dialogue - like 'Oh so that's all you think women are for?' and 'I studied all these fighting things'. She didn't really do that much - I think she contributed a little to the fighting near the end but the rest of the time she was just the damsel in distress/middle of the love triangle who kept spouting out stuff about how awesome she was without proving it. La Muerte however? Super awesome - she didn't have to tell anyone not to mess with her she could take care of herself. She just looked in your direction and you knew. Same with Manolo's cousins (I think they were his cousins? The ones that won the revolution). Those were some strong female characters, and they never had to go out of their way to say so.
