So, I came into this movie thinking that Sansho was going to be a good guy. He's a bailiff; he's in a position of authority, and I just thought he would be a good guy fighting evil; and the movie started out with a good governer fighting evil; but then Sansho turned out to be the bad guy. Why would you name a movie after the bad guy? I didn't feel like he was even a main character.
Perhaps the movie was named after him because he represented the spirit of those days. Evil, selfish men were in authority. It reminds me of Prov. 29:2, which says, when the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people mourn. There were some good governers in this movie, too, and their people loved them.
It's an interesting subject to have for a movie; good rulers versus wicked. It's a story that still applies to our world today; and it's sad to think of how many people are mourning now just like the main characters of this movie.
