Waitress

Waitress, written and directed by Adrienne Shelly, is a refreshing film. I originally saw this a couple years ago, and it has stuck with me enough that I was looking forward to seeing it again. What’s so refreshing about this film is that it is a non-traditional romantic comedy.

Most films like these have similar elements such as snappy dialogue and charming characters. Waitress has both of these. The traditional elements about this film work very well (Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion both give notable performances), but the film decides to go in a different direction. Instead of following the expected plotline, the film isn’t about Jenna “finding a man”, if you will, but in a way is rather about Jenna taking control of her life. By the end of the film, Jenna has her baby, leaves her abusive husband, ends her affair, and finally starts making pies for herself. This leaves the viewer with a completely different message than most films of its type, and it deserves recognition for that.
