Spirited Away

When I heard that the first movie of Signs and Wonders was Spirited Away I got very excited.  I had never seen the movie before but had always heard great things about it.  As I went in everyone told me I was in for a treat even John Lasseter said that we were in for a treat so this had to be an incredible film.  Unfortunately I didn’t really like the movie, I know I’m pretty severely in the minority on this point but I just didn’t think it was very good.  To start with I didn’t think it was very well written, the dialogue felt very cliché and not very realistic, but I give the movie a pass on this point because I imagine that was due mostly to the translation.  Then there’s the story, I didn’t particularly care for it.  It felt kind of childish as if a ten year old came up with a story and then an adult filled in all of the holes to make it usable as a movie plot.  Now I realize that it is intended for children but so is Narnia series and that has some very adult themes in it, I feel this movie had very few if any themes that adults can relate to.  To the film’s credit the animation was very well done.  It looked great and a lot of the characters were really cool, but there were also characters that I felt were kind of pandering.  All in all I didn’t enjoy it, the animation was great but I think that’s all that can really be said about it.

  1. Hmm...I don't know...I think most adults would find amusement in the scenes with the sootballs carrying the coals to the furnace.
Also, and this is just a matter of taste, I actually didn't care a whole lot for the animation side of it. The art was cool, but the animation style was hard for me to get used to.

Nevertheless, you are entitled to your own opinion and I award you points for being brave and posting this in a sea of Spirited Away lovers.

  2. I didn't like this movie much the first time I saw it, either. I didn't see any plot in it, but the next time I saw it I watched for the character development of Chihiro, and I think that's a large part of what made it enjoyable for me the second time. So, it may take another viewing for you to like it; or you might never like it. :) Anyways...
