The Departures is a film about Japanese morticians. It follows Daigo as he gets fired from his job as a cellist in an orchestra in Tokyo. This causes him to move back to his Hometown with his wife and live in his old home. While living in his old hometown he accidentally gets a job as a mortician or Nokanshi in Japanese. A mortician in Japanese culture is very frowned upon. Which is very weird because the ceremony is very beautiful. The ceremony almost makes me want to be a mortician there because it is so amazing. There is a great spiritual feeling to the process.
The movie though with its dark tone is actually very funny. In the first ten minutes they find out that the body they are working on is actually a hermaphrodite. The expression on Daigo's face is priceless when he finds out by washing the body. Also watching the training video that Daigo has to play the corpse too is hilarious. Also I want to mention the music is very beautiful. The only stringed instrument I really like is the cello and there is plenty of cello music. All together I think the departures is a great film and is well worth watching.
