The Trip

Last week we watched the british comedy film The Trip. I was really excited to watch this movie because I knew very little about it except that it was about a road trip. Upon watching the film, I felt like this was a pretty average comedy-drama with some very good performances. The frequent banter between Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon is really the most entertaining aspect of the film. I was very impressed how both of them could imitate the voices and mannerisms of multiple british celebrities. The scenes I enjoyed the most were really when the both of them are eating together and they try to one up each other's vocal performances. The other great thing about the "eating" scenes was that they revealed a lot of character development as the film went on. For example, at the beginning of the film Steve and Rob can't really stand each other as they throw verbal jabs at each other but as they continue to have  meals together, their conversations get more and more serious (while still occasionally their voice routines) as they talk about things such as their careers, aging, love, and even death. While I enjoyed Steve and Rob's conversations, the film started to feel pretty repetitive by the end. First they would eat together, then drive, eat, then drive. eat, then drive. The locations that they drove through were very beautiful, yet they also seemed to look the same as the film continued. The film is definitely worth watching for Steve and Rob's performances, but everything else about the film felt pretty average and there was a little too much repetition with the plot elements. It was an entertaining buddy road trip movie, but not much else.
